SOLAR ECLIPSE (8/21/17)
Throughout the day students participated in STEM activities related to the solar eclipse. For example, some fourth grade classes made models of the solar system and eclipse. Others used UV detection beads to test different objects, such as brim of a cap, a car windshield, and the UV sunglasses. Community members were invited to join us. Everyone observed the eclipse using approved UV sunglasses. We even made the news!
STEM NIGHT (11/9/17)
A time for the Big Shanty community to join in STEM Challenges with their children, view our Science Fair and showcase the daily STEM activities (Snap Circuits, Spheros, etc.) students are engaged in during the school day.
COMCAST CARES DAY (4/21/18)
During the course of that week over 700 students, staff, families, and community members (ex. Cornerstone Prepatory Academy) joined together to both create gardens related to our year-long STEM projects and/or beautify our school. There were 17 projects in all encompassing both the interior and exterior of the school grounds. Watch our video to see what we accomplished!
GARDEN GALA: Every Child--Every Grade: A Showcase of Our Students (5/3/18)
All 600+ students shared in some way what they learned over the year with a particular focus on their STEM learning with Big Shanty families, community, and special guests partnering with us in our STEM journey. Students created science based art (ex. plant cell paintings), sang songs (ex. "Bringing Bees Back"), created objects to sell (ex. bath bombs - using their chemistry knowledge and tech skills to create entertaining advertisements).
